The Midland Institute of Mining Engineers continues to encourage and support younger members, particularly students and apprentices, and reports of their activities appear here from time to time.

The J F Tunnicliffe & C S Littlewood paper competition, which is also a local competition
for the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition, takes place on an annual basis.

The 2025 competition will held at Devonshire Hall, University of Leeds, 19 February 2025.

Competitors have to produce and deliver a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation on a topic within the mining & Minerals Industry.

Winners from the J F Tunnicliffe & C S Littlewood paper competition will go through to the regional final of the IOM3 Young Persons Lecture Competition held in London.

The John F Tunnicliffe Medal

The John F Tunnicliffe Medal will be awarded to a young engineer annually  whose employer, HEI, MIMinE or NEIMME recognises them for work of outstanding quality.

In November 2015 a report of his experiences whilst on a work placement in Andina, Chile was received from Benjamin Allen-Gdanitz. The AMCO Bursary provided financial support to Benjamin to allow the work placement to go ahead and his report demonstrates the benefit of being able to access such support.
